Non-technical summary
We summarize some of the past year's most important findings within climate change-related research. New research has improved our understanding about the remaining options to achieve the Paris Agreement goals, through overcoming political barriers to carbon pricing, taking into account non-CO2 factors, a well-designed implementation of demand-side and nature-based solutions, resilience building of ecosystems and the recognition that climate change mitigation costs can be justified by benefits to the health of humans and nature alone. We consider new insights about what to expect if we fail to include a new dimension of fire extremes and the prospect of cascading climate tipping elements.
Technical summaryA synthesis is made of 10 topics within climate research, where there have been significant advances since January 2020. The insights are based on input from an international open call with broad disciplinary scope. Findings include: (1) the options to still keep global warming below 1.5 °C; (2) the impact of non-CO2 factors in global warming; (3) a new dimension of fire extremes forced by climate change; (4) the increasing pressure on interconnected climate tipping elements; (5) the dimensions of climate justice; (6) political challenges impeding the effectiveness of carbon pricing; (7) demand-side solutions as vehicles of climate mitigation; (8) the potentials and caveats of nature-based solutions; (9) how building resilience of marine ecosystems is possible; and (10) that the costs of climate change mitigation policies can be more than justified by the benefits to the health of humans and nature.

OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the association of airborne colony-forming units (CFU) at incision sites during implantation of prostheses with the incidence of either incisional or prosthesis-related surgical site infections.
DESIGNRandomized, controlled trial.
SETTINGPrimary, public institution.
PATIENTSThree hundred patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty, instrumented spinal procedures, or vascular bypass graft implantation.
METHODSPatients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the intervention group or the control group. A novel device (Air Barrier System), previously shown to reduce airborne CFU at incision sites, was utilized in the intervention group. Procedures assigned to the control group were performed without the device, under routine operating room atmospheric conditions. Patients were followed up for 12 months to determine whether airborne CFU levels at the incision sites predicted the incidence of incisional or prosthesis-related infection.
RESULTSData were available for 294 patients, 148 in the intervention group and 146 in the control group. CFU density at the incision site was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (P<.001). The density of airborne CFU at the incision site during the procedures was significantly related to the incidence of implant infection (P=.021). Airborne CFU densities were 4 times greater in procedures with implant infection versus no implant infection. All 4 of the observed prosthesis infections occurred in the control group.
CONCLUSIONReduction of airborne CFU specifically at the incision site during operations may be an effective strategy to reduce prosthesis-related infections. Trial Registration: clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT01610271

The activities of the Commission have continued to focus on controlling unwanted light and radio emissions at observatory sites, monitoring of conditions at observatory sites, and education and outreach. Commission members have been active in securing new legislation in several locations to further the protection of observatory sites as well as in the international regulation of the use of the radio spectrum and the protection of radio astronomical observations.

Archaeology, consistently warned off religion by wise old heads, here rushes deeper into the thicket to tackle the thorny topic of ancient witchcraft. The occasion was a seminar at Harvard organised by Stephen Mitchell and Neil Price to mark the twentieth anniversary of Carlo Ginzburg's influential book on the connections between witches and shamanism – and by implication the possible connections with prehistoric ritual and belief. Archaeology was by no means the only voice at the meeting, which was attended by scholars active in history, literature, divinity and anthropology. The discussions revealed much that was entangled in the modern psyche: ‘don't let's tame strangeness’ was one leitmotiv of this stimulating colloquium. A romantic attachment to the irrational is a feature of our time, especially among academics. But maybe taming strangeness is an archaeologist's real job…

The past President of Division XII, Malcolm Smith, took the chair of the business meeting of C50, in the absence of the past President of C50, Richard Wainscoat. He described the procedure of the election in 2006 of the then-time vice-president of C50, Richard Wainscoat, as President of C50, after the untimely deatch of the then-time C50 President, Hugo Schwarz. He also described the procedure for electing the incoming OC members and officers.

Thermal spray of carbide coatings with high hardness and corrosion resistance onto steel substrates has technological importance. The adhesive strength is greatly effected by the interfacial impurities. Low porous and good quality 200 μm thick 86WC10Co4Cr coatings on 4140 steel are obtained by thermal spray methods using SC-HVOF gun at Cooper Oil Tools, Houston, TX. A Carl Zeiss DSM942 SEM with 3.5 nm resolution at 30 keV and Kevex LPX1 Super Dry Quantum Si(Li) Detector with < 145 eV resolution for Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDXS) were used to study the elemental distribution across the interface. Fig. 1 shows the SEM micrographs of the interface between 86WC10Co4Cr thermal spray coating and 4140 steel substrate. The anchor patterns seen at the interface are believed to improve the adhesive qualities between the coating and the substrate.

Thermal spray processing has become an important powder-consolidation technique to yield new materials for extremes of temperature, radiation, wear, corrosion and mechanical stresses. High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) spray coating process gives higher deposition densities and coating hardness; lower oxide content and porosity. The adhesive strength of thermal spray coatings is greatly effected by the interfacial impurities. The ring shear test method shown in Fig. 1 appears to give the most accurate results on shear adhesive strength. A typical ring shear test result of 88WC12Co 1/4" ring HVOF thermal spray coating on 4140 steel rod using a Jet kote thermal spray gun is shown in Fig. 2. Repeated ring shear tests on similar samples prepared under same spray and test conditions resulted in different shear bond strength and coating ring displacement before break off. We examined the ring shear tested coatings using a Zeiss DMS942 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Kevex Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDXS) with LPX1 Quantum Si(Li) Detector.
